J. A. Wylie As I Knew Him -study

New Window

Rev. C. A. Salmond, M.A., Edinburgh

1890

"It was a life of great simplicity both in purpose and in habit. Spent mostly at the desk, or rather at the desk and mantlepiece on which a great part of his writing was done, it was varied by two regular daily 'constitutionals,' at daybreak and in the afternoon, when he was at home, and by an occasional excursion to one or other of the historic lands of Europe, in the intervals of his class work. The day was ordinarily crowned by an hour or two of cheerful converse by the hearth. Those favoured with his intimate friendship will bear the writer out in saying, as he has already done elsewhere, that to be with Dr. Wylie at such times, and to listen to his rich and sparkling conversation, on whatever subject might come up, meant both education and enjoyment.

Men spoke of him sometimes as a 'fanatic;' but if his utterances on the Papacy were strong, his detestation of the system was equalled by his tenderness for its unhappy votaries. To virile strength he united a woman's sensibility. It was a profound mistake to fancy in him an acrid, self-assertive, one-idead controversialist. He was one of the best informed, most genial, and sympathic of men, and his deep unaffected humility was one of his greatest charms. You could not be long with him without perceiving in him a lover of Christ and of all good men, and his mellow unostentatious piety gave an unmistakable savour to all his life."

Jehovah Jesus Weather satellite picture of the LORD Jehovah Jesus. -devotional

New Window

An evangelist in England, Jim Sepulveda, was given the photo from someone who worked at a weather station, in 1986 or 87. Some time later, Jim clinically died, saw Jesus, and came back to life. He says the One he saw while dead is the same as the One in the satellite photo! He recognized Him immediately! There is a video testimony of Jim, telling how he got the photo, his death experience, etc. Videos may still be available at The 11th Hour Television Ministry, P.O. Box 4848 Modesto, CA 95352. This is where Jim was interviewed. Just ask for Jim Sepulveda's testimony.

What is the meaning of the Christian fish symbol? -study

New Window

Tom Stewart

7-20-2001

"Christianity is more than a discussion of pictures and symbols, though Christ Himself furnished us with one of the most powerful statements of His identity, using imagery. 'Jesus saith unto him, I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me' (John 14:6). What is the origin of the Christian fish symbol? We are told that the Early Christians used the sign of the fish for identification, especially in times of Roman persecution, where a cautious Christian might scribe on the ground the top arc of the fish, awaiting the respondent to draw the countersign of the bottom arc, sketching the fish symbol, thus completing the password. 'Safety is of the LORD' (Proverbs 21:31). Why the identification with the fish? Perhaps because the Apostles were told that the LORD Jesus Christ promised to make them 'fishers of men' (Matthew 4:19). Since the Early Christians were identified as followers of 'that Way' (Acts 19:9, 23; 24:22), it could be construed that they would also be fishers of men. 'I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some' (1Corinthians 9:22)."

Jesus Is Coming Soon! -study

New Window

Katie Stewart

11-3-2002

"The darkness from sin in this world is so dense! There are evil tidings in every direction of the globe. The Good News is that Jesus is coming soon and will eventually put an end to this sickening downward pull of the Devil. Jesus said 'evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived' (2Timothy 3:13). In the days of C. H. Spurgeon, (1834-1892), of the Philadelphian Church Age period in which he lived, Pastor Spurgeon said, 'Worst of all, the church, so largely apostate as it is...' And that was more than a hundred years ago! That was Philadelphia, the Church period when the LORD said that the Church still had 'a little strength'! Is it really any wonder to us today, that the Professed Church, as a whole, has no strength to it at all? Of course, there are tiny pockets of exceptions. The LORD will have His 'remnant.' As it was in Elijah's day, 'even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of Grace' (Romans 11:5). But, the Professed Church today has been swallowed up by the world. 'When the Son Of Man cometh, shall He find Faith on the Earth?' (Luke 18:8).
'I looked for the Church and I found it in the world;
I looked for the world, and alas, I found it in the Church.'
--Horatius Bonar
As for the world, listen. 'O Earth, Earth, Earth, hear the Word of the LORD... Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a Righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute Judgment and Justice in the Earth' (Jeremiah 22:29, 23:5). And He is coming soon!"

Jesus Is Eternal Life -study

New Window

Tom Stewart

12-2-2001

"The quest for Eternal Life is as old as man himself. "22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of Us [the Triune God], to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken" (Genesis 3:22-23). Stories, fables, and legends are full of heroes and villains grasping for the much sought after Eternal Life; but, why should we be such strangers to the simplicity of the Truth that Jesus is the "Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6)?... From the beginning and throughout, Eternal Life residing in any human being is a matter of laying hold of Jesus Christ by faith, i.e., "lay hold on Eternal Life" (1Timothy 6:12, 19), and abiding in Him by the "faith which worketh by love" (Galatians 5:6). "If ye keep My Commandments, ye shall abide in My Love; even as I have kept My Father's Commandments, and abide in His Love" (John 15:10)... Thus, by faith, our laying hold and abiding in "Christ, Who is our Life" (Colossians 3:4), is to possess Eternal Life now and forever. "And this is Life Eternal, that they might know Thee the Only True God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent" (John 17:3)."

New Window

The central theme of the Christian Gospel is the Cross of Christ. BELIEVING that God has made the Perfect Sacrifice for our sins is the PURPOSE for His dying. All the difficultiles that have arisen since the Cross, are due to a confusion about what Saving Faith is.

"Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured The Cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the Throne of God... But God forbid that I should glory, save in The Cross of our LORD Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." (Hebrews 12:2; Galatians 6:14).

John Wycliffe's Last Days -story

New Window

J. A. Wylie

[1808-1890]

Anticipation of a Violent Death — Wonderfully Shielded by Events — Struck with Palsy — Dies December 31st, 1384 — Estimate of his Position and Work — Completeness of his Scheme of Reform — The Father of the Reformation — The Founder of England's Liberties.

The moment his great work was finished, that moment the Voice spake to him which said,
"Come up hither." As he stood before the earthly symbols of his Lord's passion, a cloud suddenly descended upon him; and when its darkness had passed, and the light had returned, serener and more bright than ever was dawn or noon of earthly day, it was no memorial or symbol that he saw; it was his Lord Himself, in the august splendor of His glorified humanity. Blessed transition! The earthly sanctuary, whose gates he had that morning entered, became to him the vestibule of the Eternal Temple; and the Sabbath, whose services he had just commenced, became the dawn of a better Sabbath, to be closed by no evening with its shadows, and followed by no week-day with its toils.

"While the Goforths were attending a summer conference, south of Chicago, it was announced that a 'brilliant speaker' was to come on a certain day for just one address. A very large expectant audience awaited him. The chairman introduced the speaker with such fulsome praise there seemed no room for the glory of God in what was to follow. The stranger had been sitting with bowed head and face hidden. As he stepped forward he stood a moment as if in prayer, then said..."

3-1-99

A story of true Love, which can only be founded upon Christ.
There were three things in life that Izumi valued most: Love, Gentleness, and Mercy. She rarely witnessed these qualities in the people around her, so when she found them, Izumi would savor every moment as if hoarding food for the long periods of famine that were so familiar to her. Indeed, had she not endured famine that very day? How welcome then, was the kind look on the face of the embarrassed American! If he had known the happiness that the one smile gave her, he would not have reproached himself for speaking.

Judgment of America - prophecy

New Window

R. G. Hardy

For these are the days and the hours appointed when I shall come down in My fury; when I shall come down in My anger for a nation that has forgotten Me, saith God. Yea, it is an evil nation. It's a nation full of violence. It's a nation full of sin. It is a nation full of homosexuality, even the sin that I hate and detest, saith God. And this nation is full of it; this city is full of it; yea; it is even seeking to creep into this church, saith God, but My face is against it, saith the Almighty. I shall let My destruction and My devastation fall, saith God.

Judgment of God in the Endtime - prophecy

New Window

a Chinese beggar boy

I weep tonight. I am heart-broken. I am in deep sorrow because those who believe in me are so very few. I planned and prepared heaven for every one, having made room for all people in all the world. I made the New Jerusalem in three great cities, one above the other, with plenty of space for all men. But men will not believe me. Those who believe are so very few. I am sad, so very sad. (This message was given between heart-rending sobs and flood of tears from the boy.) Since men will not believe me, I must destroy the wicked earth. I planned to visit it with three great calamities, but it is so wicked that I have added a fourth.

Some Pass By ---New Window
a vignette
This vignette is dedicated to those who, when they look, do not pass by.
A story of homelessness, compassion, and love.
"If I were you," warned the police officer who had been asking her the questions, "I would stay out of dark alleys. Especially, if you are alone."
"But, it's Providential I did, this one time," smiled Hannah.
"It's just another transient," shrugged the officer, tucking the clipboard he had been writing on, under his arm. "If this one lives to be discharged, he'll be out on the streets again. Bums like him die everyday." The police officer checked his clipboard one more time, and walked away.
A sick feeling crept over Hannah. She navigated her way to the main exit, and quickly left the hospital. Hannah looked up at the sky. Usually, the air was filled with smog, but a gentle breeze sent out from God's heavenly chamber had carried the man-made poison away...
The policeman's words echoed in her mind.
"Just another transient." A crowd of people exiting a nearby building, shook Hannah from her uneasy solitude.

Charlotte Bronte- A Tribute ---New Window
For many years, I have enjoyed the company of Charlotte Bronte.
Even though she died over a hundred years ago, her voice did not. Her voice can be heard in the poetry she wrote, and in the novels she penned.
Among her novels, "Jane Eyre" is, by far, her most well known work. "Jane Eyre" has survived six movies, one of which was in Hindi, two made for TV movies, and one miniseries! The most recent version, and my personal favorite, was A & E's 1997 production, "Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre", Ciran (pronounced kee-ran) Hinds's portrayal of Mr. Rochester was very well acted, as was Samantha Morton's Jane Eyre. However, Charlotte Bronte's novel is more than just a good story. It is a morality lesson that people of all generations can learn from. In this age of "throw away marriages", Charlotte's words still echo from the past...

Alvin York: In the Lion's Den ---New Window
On October 8, 1918,
the day that made Corporal Alvin York famous, he captured 132 German prisoners, and became a national hero. The German Major of the prisoners had providentially lived in Chicago for a time, and spoke English well. Thus, Alvin was able to give demands that normally would have required a translator. Upon hearing Corporal York giving orders to his men, (there were only seven), the German Major asked, "'How many have you got?" and I said, "I have got a-plenty," and pointed my pistol at him all the time."

The Adventures of Leviticus and Mark ---New Window
The tender story of two boys striving to be "like HIM."
"We shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is." (1 John 3:2)
My fondest memories are of my childhood. The adventures that I had with a boy named, Mark, will always stand out in my mind as the best time of my life. I often wander back to that time. Back to the time when innocence came so easily.

The Secret Garden of Dana Erickson ---New Window
The story of a young woman coming to terms with her retarded, older sister.
I have an older sister named Dana. She's seven years older than I, and has the mental capacity of a three year old. When she was 2 months old, she stopped breathing for six minutes. The doctors were able to bring her back to life. They called it a miracle. However, when she grew older it was apparent there was brain damage. That small period of time when there was no oxygen to her brain, would change Dana's life forever. And mine.
When I was small, Dana was a wonderful playmate for me. But when I started to grow up, she began to lose me. I played with her every day, but she could sense the changes in me. I sometimes think Dana knows more than she lets on. I liken it to a secret garden locked inside her mind. She lives there every day, and when I see her, she's looking through a keyhole. I struggle to see the whole Dana, but all I can see is her eyes. I know she wants to come out and meet me, but the gate is locked.

The Miracle of Shady Meadow ---New Window
The article read as follows:
"Miss Cornelia Dewey passed away yesterday due to old age. She was 87. No surviving relatives." It pains me to see how many people misunderstood Miss Dewey. She was the godliest person that I have ever had the honor of knowing.
In the interest of informing people about this gentle lady, I would like to tell you of an incident that has been referred to as "the miracle of shady meadow".
To give you a perfect understanding of the way things were, I must go back five years. We had already known each other for some time, and I often visited her house. Even though she was sixty years older than I, we talked as though we were equals. Not that I ever tried to be disrespectful or talk out of turn, but her demeanor made you forget that she was eighty-two.

Justification By Faith
LECTURE V. EXTRACTED FROM
LECTURES TO PROFESSING CHRISTIANS

WStS Note: Mr. Finney is not using the word "imputed" in any way that disagrees with Mr. Bunyan's article above. --study

New Window

Charles G. Finney

(1792-1875)

"Gospel Justification is not the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. Under the gospel, sinners are not justified by having the obedience of Jesus Christ set down to their account, as if He had obeyed the law for them, or in their stead. It is not an uncommon mistake to suppose that when sinners are justified under the gospel they are accounted righteous in the eye of the law, by having the obedience or righteousness of Christ imputed to them. I have not time to go into an examination of this subject now. I can only say that this idea is absurd and impossible, for this reason, that Jesus Christ was bound to obey the law for himself, and could no more perform works of supererogation, or obey on our account, than anybody else. Was it not His duty to love the Lord his God, with all His heart and soul and mind and strength, and to love His neighbor as himself? Certainly; and if He had not done so, it would have been sin. The only work of supererogation He could perform was to submit to sufferings that were not deserved. This is called His obedience unto death, and this is set down to our account. But if His obedience of the law is set down to our account, why are we called on to repent and obey the law ourselves? Does God exact double service, yes, triple service, first to have the law obeyed by the surety for us, then that He must suffer the penalty for us, and then that we must repent and obey ourselves? No such thing is demanded. It is not required that the obedience of another should be imputed to us. All we owe is perpetual obedience to the law of benevolence. And for this there can be no substitute. If we fail of this we must endure the penalty, or receive a free pardon."

Keeping Covenant --study

The Promise of the Spirit ---New Window
Keeping Covenant Part 1.
"The grand design of the Spirit's indwelling is to secure the perfect love, complete obedience, or entire sanctification that has ALWAYS been demanded by the Moral Law. '36 Master, which is the great Commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great Commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the prophets' (Matthew 22:36-40). This Law of Love is understood in the New Testament as the Law of Christ. 'Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the Law of Christ' (Galatians 6:2). Always, it has been man's imperative to understand how to submit to this Law; and, now it is plain that a Covenant as old as Abraham has been fulfilled through the New Covenant's giving of the Holy Spirit-- which, BY FAITH secures for us perfect obedience to God. 'That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the Promise of the Spirit through faith' (Galatians 3:14)."

A Covenant of Peace ---New Window
Keeping Covenant Part 2.
"For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the Covenant of My Peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee" (Isaiah 54:10).
"The one who needs most the Covenant of Peace, is the one that is most providentially directed to receive it, because 'my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus' (Philippians 4:19). It has been the experience of the Saints throughout the ages that God's Covenant of Peace has been available to those who have been led to lay hold of it. 'There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling' (Psalm 91:10). 'There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief' (Proverbs 12:21). It is just when the enemy casts the greatest shadow, that we need most to turn to the Promises of God and trust in Jehovah's Covenant of Peace. 'When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him' (Isaiah 59:19)."

God of the Rear Guard ---New Window
Keeping Covenant Part 3.
"For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your Rereward [literally, Rear Guard]"
(Isaiah 52:12).
"As the Church approaches the end of this Church Age, the Saints who are now alive, must address the concept that Someone must be guarding the last of us, as we leave this planet, i.e., by Pre-Tribulational Rapture, Pre-Wrath Rapture, etc... the LORD Jesus understands the difficult situation of His people, who are the "Remnant of His Heritage" (Micah 7:18), that vex their "righteous soul from day to day with [the world's] unlawful deeds" (2Peter 2:8). By faith, before the enemy, who spread themselves out against the Saints as a "green bay tree" (Psalm 37:35) to exterminate the Faithful, our God will interpose Himself, watching our back side, to deliver us; even if He must Rapture us. "Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36)... Just as we understand the specific Promise of Isaiah 52:12, to be God's Covenant of Himself being our Rear Guard, all of God's Promises may be utilized as Covenants for His protection. "Whereby are given unto us Exceeding Great and Precious Promises: that by These ye might be partakers of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust" (2Peter 1:4). We ought to walk with confidence, when we consider that the God of Omnipotence not only goes before us, but He guards us from behind!"
