Understanding
of the Times (2001) |
Tom Stewart |

UPDATED in light of the September 11th 2001 attack
on the Pentagon and destruction of the World Trade Center. "Originally written more than three years earlier, this article was composed with the anticipation of a May 31st 1998, Pentecost Rapture; but, though the Sovereign LORD has chosen to tarry, the observations and conclusions remain essentially intact, updating them in the context of rapidly unfolding events, e.g., the Tuesday, September 11th 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City and the attack against the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. 'Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the Great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ' (Titus 2:13). Though many eschatological positions may be advanced to explain current events, this writer is not interested in militating against other eschatologists' favored positions; but simply, to advance a comprehensible position, that has an 'understanding of the times' that the Saints would know 'what to do' (1Chronicles 12:32)." |

"Are we not all too apt to seek Him rather because of our need than for His joy and pleasure? This should not be. We do not admire selfish children who only think of what they can get from their parents, and are unmindful of the pleasure that they may give or the service that they may render. But are not we in danger of forgetting that pleasing GOD means giving Him pleasure? Some of us look back to the time when the words "To please GOD" meant no more than not to sin against Him, not to grieve Him; but would the love of earthly parents be satisfied with the mere absence of disobedience? Or a bridegroom, if his bride only sought him for the supply of her own need? A word about the morning watch may not be out of place here. There is no time so profitably spent as the early hour given to JESUS only. Do we give sufficient attention to this hour? If possible, it should be redeemed; nothing can make up for it. We must take time to be holy! One other thought. When we bring our questions to GOD, do we not sometimes either go on to offer some other petition, or leave the closet without waiting for replies? Does not this seem to show little expectation of an answer, and little desire for one? Should we like to be treated so? Quiet waiting before GOD would save from many a mistake and from many a sorrow. We have found the bride making a glad discovery of a KING--her KING--and not a cross, as she expected; this is the first-fruit of her consecration... what shall be the royal dignity and blessedness of the risen and exalted bride! For ever with her LORD, for ever like her LORD, for ever conscious that His desire is toward her, she will share alike His heart and His throne. Can a study of the book which helps us to understand these mysteries of grace and love be other than most profitable?" |

Unity in the LORD - promises |
Katie Stewart |

Eph. 4:3-6;13 "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling. One LORD, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in you all... Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ." |

Unity of Moral Action |
Charles G. Finney |
(1792-1875) |
"Obedience cannot be partial in the sense that the subject ever does, or can, partly obey and partly disobey at the same time. That is, consecration, to be real, must be, for the time being, entire and universal... Can the will at the same time choose opposite and conflicting ultimate ends? While one ultimate end is chosen, can the will choose anything inconsistent with this end?... Sin is the supreme preference of self-gratification. Holiness is the supreme preference of the good of being. Can then two supreme preferences coexist in the same mind? It is plainly impossible to make opposite choices at the same time, that is, to choose opposite and conflicting ultimate ends." -CHARLES G. FINNEY. |

Victory Over Temptation -study |
Tom Stewart |
12-13-2000 |
"For we have not an High Priest which cannot
be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like
as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). "The choices we make when faced with the temptation to not love God's Word or to speak of ourselves, is the difference between holiness and sin. 'For we have not an High Priest [Jesus] which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in ALL points tempted like as we are, yet WITHOUT sin' (Hebrews 4:15). That holy struggle to overcome the temptation to sin was fought by our Elder Brother, the LORD Jesus. 'For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of One: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren' (2:11). Our High Priest told His disciples at the Last Supper, 'Ye are they which have continued with Me in My temptations' (Luke 22:28)." |

Vision of the Bear and the Church - prophecy |
David Allen Lewis |
|
I slipped over to the side of the platform and quietly closed the door. It did not seem like a very strong door. I was terrified. There was not latch or lock on the door. I stood holding it shut but knew my strength would not be enough if the sleeping bear woke up. I called to the men of the church to come and help me hold it shut. No one, not even one person paid attention. I kept warning the people. I said, "If you won't help me hold the door, at least get out and save yourselves." Most of the people didn't even look my way. The few who did chuckled tolerantly. These people were not hostile. They were just blind to the danger we faced. They were apathetic.26 |
