"He will show you things to come" (John 16:13).

The Spirit of God has PROMISED to reveal to His
people the nature of the Tribulation Week events.

"Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them [the prophets] did signify, when It [the Spirit of Christ] testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are NOW reported unto you by them that have preached the Gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven; which things the angels desire to look into"
(1Peter 1:11-12).

"Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in My Name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them"
(Luke 21:8).

WStS Note:
Concerning Dates- these articles & charts will mention dates that have come and gone. They were human guesstimations-- not the infallible Word of God. However, the articles & charts will retain these dates- though incorrect- because it is our belief that the correct dates cannot vary from these articles by much. The Tribulation Week will start SOON. The time-related sequence of events displayed on The Big Chart Timeline, and the Timeline articles which correlate to these events, are all still valid.

True Christian consistency is to
"grow in grace, and in the Knowledge of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ"
(2 Peter 3:18).
Recognizing our need to grow, we will change
"our views and language and practice as often and as fast, as we can obtain
further information"

(from the Preface to Charles G. Finney's "
Systematic Theology" ---New Window).

BABYLON the GREAT, Or, The Coming Destruction of the One World Religion: (Part 1) The Purpose and History of Babylon the Great ---New Window 2-7-99
Tom Stewart

Any attempt to describe the final destruction of Babylon the Great-- "THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH"-- demands an identification of that system, i.e., its purpose, history, as well as present and prophetic future.

BABYLON the GREAT, Or, The Coming Destruction of the One World Religion: (Part 2) The Reformation and the Church of Rome ---New Window 2-7-99
Tom Stewart

By Divine Authority, the Apostle John was directed to align Nimrod's Babylon with the finally destroyed Babylon of Daniel's 70th Week (Daniel 9:27), which indicates a clear line of succession for Babylon the Great.
Other servants of this Divine Authority Of The WORD Of God which follow this example are--

  • Charles Chiniquy (1809-1899): "Rome is... that Modern Babylon" -Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, (1886).
  • John Wycliffe (1324-1384): "the supreme authority of Scripture... Christ's law sufficeth by itself to rule Christ's Church." -On the Truth and Meaning of Scripture, (c.1380).
  • Martin Luther wrote, "I know that the Papacy is none other than the kingdom of Babylon, and the violence of Nimrod the mighty hunter" -The Babylonish Captivity of the Church, (October 6th 1520).
  • Alexander Hislop: "Rome as the Apocalyptic Babylon... Let every Christian henceforth and for ever treat it as an outcast from the pale of Christianity. Instead of speaking of it as a Christian Church, let it be recognised and regarded as the Mystery of Iniquity, yea, as the very Synagogue of Satan." -The Two Babylons: Or, The Papal Worship Proved to be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife, (1853)
  • James A. Wylie (1808-1890): "From the fourth century... the Bible began to be hidden from the people... the clergy usurped authority over the members of the Church... While the, 'living oracles' [Scripture] were neglected, the zeal of the clergy began to spend itself upon rites and ceremonies borrowed from the pagans. These were multiplied to such a degree, that [even] Augustine complained that they were 'less tolerable than the yoke of the Jews under the law.'" -History of Protestantism, vol. 1, pgs. 16,18, (1878).
  • It has always been, is, and will always be right for those who name "the Name of Christ [to] depart from iniquity" (2Timothy 2:19) by separating themselves from Babylon the Great. "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the LORD, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you" (2Corinthians 6:17).

BABYLON the GREAT, Or, The Coming Destruction of the One World Religion: (Part 3) The Ecumenical Movement and the Church of Rome ---New Window 2-7-99
Tom Stewart

It has been an historic dogma of the Catholic Church that "outside the [Catholic] Church there is no salvation". "They could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it" (from "The Catechism of the Catholic Church" [1992], paragraph 846). This was intended by the Papacy to place the world in universal need of coming to Rome to receive the benefits of their ecumenical salvation...
"An important affirmation made in the early phase of collaboration between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches was that the two share in 'one and the same ecumenical movement'... The oneness of the ecumenical movement refers fundamentally to its orientation towards a 'common calling'" (from the WCC's "Towards a Common Understanding and Vision of the World Council of Churches", paragraph 2.10)... The Harlot Church of Rome is an implacable enemy of Jehovah Jesus, for she is the Great Whore... and the World Council of Churches' "common calling" collaboration with the Church of Rome is spiritual adultery. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3). Rome's doctrine damns her faithful, and her history betrays her origin-- Babylon. "Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD'S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence" (Jeremiah 51:6)...
The Roman Catholic Church (RCC) is not a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC); and, it has never applied for membership. Rome saith, "I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow" (Revelation 18:7). "The RCC's self-understanding has been one reason why it has not joined" (from an FAQ at the WCC's website [1999], which asks if the Roman Catholic Church is a member of the World Council of Churches). Rome understands that the Road of Ecumenism does not lead to Geneva-- the WCC's headquarters-- but it leads back to Rome...
One of the "principal concerns" of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) was the "restoration of unity among all Christians" (from the Second Vatican Council, "Decree on Ecumenism- Unitatis Redintegratio", paragraph 1)... Commenting on the term "ecumenical movement", the "Decree on Ecumenism" stated that "when the obstacles to perfect ecclesiastical communion have been gradually overcome, all Christians will at last, in a common celebration of the Eucharist, be gathered into the one and only Church in that unity which Christ bestowed on His Church from the beginning. We believe that this unity subsists in the Catholic Church as something she can never lose, and we hope that it will continue to increase until the end of time" (from the Second Vatican Council, "Decree on Ecumenism- Unitatis Redintegratio", paragraph 4). And indeed, the "leopard [has not changed] his spots" (Jeremiah 13:23)!

BABYLON the GREAT, Or, The Coming Destruction of the One World Religion: (Part 5) Billy Graham: Christianity's Modern Balaam ---New Window 2-7-99
Tom Stewart

"Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD"
(2Chronicles 19:2).
A thoughtful evaluation of the ministry of Billy Graham will reveal that Billy Graham has been mightily used of Satan to break down the walls of separation between the Godly and the ungodly. "And ye shall be holy unto Me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be Mine" (Leviticus 20:26). It will also reveal that Billy Graham's most effective work for Babylon the Great has been that of masquerading as a Bible believing evangelist-- doing "the work of the LORD deceitfully" (Jeremiah 48:10)-- seducing unwary Pilgrims into laying aside the "Sword of the Spirit" (Ephesians 6:17) in the name of Christian Love and Unity. If the Pope had approached the Bible-Believing-Evangelical-Community with the need for Ecumenical Unity in previous generations, he would have been viewed with suspicion-- on account of the corruptions of the Medieval Catholic Church, the terrors of the Inquisition, the wicked absurdity of Papal infallibility, etc. "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16).

BABYLON the GREAT, Or, The Coming Destruction of the One World Religion: (Part 6) The Final Judgment of the Great Whore ---New Window 2-7-99
Tom Stewart

"He hath judged the Great Whore, which did corrupt the Earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand"
(Revelation 19:1-2).
We have only focused on the most pervasive and conspicuous manifestation of the Great Whore in this present Church Age-- the institution of Roman Catholicism. "And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth" (Revelation 17:9). Rather than viewing Catholicism as merely one of many manifestations of the LORD Jesus Christ's Church, the Church of Rome's history demonstrates it to be entirely transformed from the Primitive Church of the Apostles into the abominable Babylon the Great... As we approach the Tribulation Week, the pace is quickening as "evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived" (2Timothy 3:13). We need to remember that the Church of Rome has been "Satan's seat" (Revelation 2:13) for more than a millennium...
"when the obstacles to perfect ecclesiastical communion have been gradually overcome, all Christians will at last, in a common celebration of the Eucharist, be gathered into the one and only Church" (from the Second Vatican Council, "Decree on Ecumenism- Unitatis Redintegratio", paragraph 4)... Rome's "patience" in achieving the universal domination that describes her name, i.e., catholic, ought to be observed by even the Godly... Pope John Paul II tenaciously stated his commitment to the global union awaiting the Church at the New Millennium, "I myself intend to promote every suitable initiative aimed at making the witness of the entire Catholic community understood in its full purity and consistency, especially considering the engagement which awaits the Church at the threshold of the new Millennium [WStS emphasis added]... Does the Roman Catholic Church-- Babylon the Great-- endorse or promote the United Religions Initiative (URI)? If "in her [Babylon the Great] was found the blood of prophets, and of Saints, and of all that were slain upon the Earth" (Revelation 18:24), then the UR must eventually become attached to the Pope and the Church of Rome for the UR to be identified as Babylon the Great... This writer is persuaded that Babylon the Great, which is essentially Roman Catholicism, must soon incorporate with the United Religions, if the Pope still desires the headship of the world's religions, i.e., to be the False Prophet... Accordingly, the Papal celebration of the "Jubilee of the Year 2000" includes:

  • (1) "An Interreligious Encounter": "As one millennium draws to a close and the next looms near, it has been thought appropriate to invite a certain number of people belonging to different religious traditions to come together for a few days reflection. This interreligious encounter, which is being organized by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, will take place in Rome 24-29 October 1999" (from the Vatican website), and

  • (2) a "Day of Reflection on lnterreligious Dialogue": "An invitation to prayer and reflection addressed particularly to Catholics... fixed for Pentecost Sunday in the year 2000... Pentecost is a sign that Babel can be overcome, that harmony can be achieved, and this finally is the goal of interreligious dialogue... for Christians to remember that they are not Christians just for themselves alone, but that they are called to relate to other believers and indeed to all members of humanity" (from the Vatican website). But for those who look for their LORD and a soon Pre-Tribulational Rapture, "God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain Salvation by our LORD Jesus Christ" (1Thessalonians 5:9).

In the Book of Revelation, we find a description of Babylon the Great (17:1-18), her final destruction (18:1-24), and the rejoicing in Heaven at the judgment of the Great Whore (19:1-4)... Antichrist turns against Babylon the Great 8-9 days prior to the End of the Tribulation Week... "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues" (Revelation 18:4). This most important message of God to those who would be preserved from Divine Destruction is to COME OUT OF BABYLON NOW. End of Series.

Be Fruitful and Multiply: World Population Reaches 6 Billion ---New Window 10-15-99
Tom Stewart

The All Wise God certainly knew man's prospects when He gave the command to "be fruitful, and multiply" (Genesis 1:28). Because ungodly man holds the "Truth in unrighteousness" (Romans 1:18), the fruitfulness of having children that God intended to be a blessing for him, has become his curse. "Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is His reward" (Psalms 127:3). "If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto My Name, saith the LORD of Hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart" (Malachi 2:2). But, could not the All Powerful God have miraculously multiplied the planet's resources to have supplied man's needs, if they had walked in obedience? Certainly. "Thou gavest also Thy Good Spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not Thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst" (Nehemiah 9:20). But, in the Providence of God, the Eternal God understood that rebellious mankind would reach a conclusion, beyond which He would not allow them to continue.

For the Elect's Sake, Or, That a Merciful God Will Shorten the Tribulation Week ---New Window 12-10-98
Tom Stewart

"And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the Elect's sake those days shall be shortened"
(Matthew 24:22).
The final Salvation of both the Nation Born In A Day (Isaiah 66:8), i.e., Israel, as well as the Salvation of the Gentiles, who shall enter the Millennium, depends upon the LORD God's merciful cutting short of the Tribulation Week. "And the Gentiles shall come to Thy Light, and kings to the brightness of Thy Rising" (60:3).

Hastening the LORD's Return ---New Window 4-20-2001
Tom Stewart

"Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God" (2Peter 3:12).
This concept of hastening the LORD's Return is in keeping with praying for the fulfillment of prophecy, i.e., the LORD requiring His people to petition Him to do what He said He would do. "36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. 37 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock" (Ezekiel 36:36-37). Though the outcome is certain, still the Almighty allows our participation in the fulfillment of prophecy through the means of believing prayer. "And He said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in Heaven, so in Earth" (Luke 11:2). However, hastening the LORD's Return adds another dimension in addition to prayer. "Occupy till I come" (Luke 19:13).

How to Be Ready for the Rapture ---New Window 5-5-02
Tom Stewart

"It is the height of conceit that we would ever think that we will make ourself ready to be raptured home to Heaven by the simple force of our will. 'O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps' (Jeremiah 10:23). If we have learned anything about the LORD Jesus Christ, we have learned that 'not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us' (Titus 3:5). In other words, we must be trusting in His merit and not any so-called worthiness of our own for Salvation, Sanctification, and Eternity. '3 For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for Righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the Reward not reckoned of Grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that Justifieth the ungodly, his Faith is counted for Righteousness' (Romans 4:3-5). In sum, our confidence and sufficiency is not in ourselves, but in God. 'Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God' (2Corinthians 3:5).

Having clearly established that we must presently be living 'by the Faith of the Son of God, Who loved [us], and gave Himself for [us]' (Galatians 2:20), we can address how to be ready for the Rapture. 'Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh' (Matthew 24:44). However, in our attempt to properly emphasize the 'Grace of God that bringeth Salvation' (Titus 2:11), we have a tendency to discount those Scriptures that make us responsible for our own readiness to meet the LORD Jesus Christ, when He returns for us in the Rapture. 'Even so Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone' (James 2:17). It would be a grave mistake to assume that any action that we have taken in the past, will be sufficient by itself to ensure our readiness to be raptured. 'Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man' (Luke 21:36). Rather than relying upon any metaphysical formula from men promising that God will grant us the indulgence of our sins that we are committing or will commit-- and, still rapture us home to Heaven-- we ought rather to faithfully declare our absolute necessity of a continuing and practical holiness. 'Follow Peace with all men, and Holiness, without which no man shall see the LORD' (Hebrews 12:14)."

In the Third Day: The Fulfillment of Bible Prophecy, Or, An Exposition of Hosea 6:2 ---New Window 9-4-2000
Tom Stewart

"After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight"
(Hosea 6:2).

Does the Scripture give credence to those who believe a time frame may be calculated for prophetic events such as the Rapture of the Church or the Re-birth and Restoration of Israel to true faith in Jehovah? Historically, the prophet Daniel calculated the length of the Babylonian Captivity from Jeremiah's prophecy. "In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the Word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem" (Daniel 9:2). This author believes that such evidence has been available to the Church, through the prophecies of Hosea, to give us a credible time frame for the momentous events of prophecy that will close out this Church Age... The impending deliverance through the Pre-Tribulational Rapture of the Church, the ensuing judgments of the Tribulation Week, the subsequent Re-Birth and Restoration of the Nation of Israel to true faith in Jehovah, the Second Coming of the LORD Jesus Christ, and the Millennial Reign of the Messiah, are events of the greatest moment, but all can be manipulated by the Almighty, with greater ease than a child plays with a toy, or than a potter forms his clay. "5 Then the Word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in Mine hand, O house of Israel" (Jeremiah 18:5-6).

The Conflicts of Armageddon ---New Window 6-2-2001
Tom Stewart

"And He gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon" (Revelation 16:16).
"Armageddon, presently only a rich archaeological excavation and tourist site, lies about 18 miles (29 kilometers) southeast of the coastal city of Haifa, in northern Israel. Because Megiddo occupied a strategic military position on the Plain of Esdraelon-- which is the Greek derivation of the Hebrew, Yizre'el meaning God will sow, and is also identified with the Valley of Jezreel of Scripture-- it was the scene of numerous historic, Biblical battles and many conflicts more recent... The Battle of Armageddon, in the world's vocabulary, evokes images of a doomsday destruction of the world, and a sense of overwhelming fearfulness. This is as it should be. For though the Saviour has tirelessly invited humanity to find forgiveness for sins 'through faith in His Name' (Acts 3:16) and, consequently, 'peace with God' (Romans 5:1), there must come a time when His gracious offer would be withdrawn. 'And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this The Judgment' (Hebrews 9:27). To allow man's probation to go on forever would only harden man's resolve that his sin would never find him out. But, 'be sure your sin will find you out' (Numbers 32:23)! The cavalier attitude of many toward Christ and sin, is, 'I may repent tomorrow.' However, tomorrow may never come. 'Ye know not what shall be on the morrow' (James 4:14). 'Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of Salvation' (2Corinthians 6:2). 'To day if ye will hear His Voice, harden not your hearts' (Hebrews 4:7)... Armageddon truly cometh." 58

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel, Or, The Wisdom of God in All of the Seventy Weeks ---New Window 10-30-98
Tom Stewart

Daniel's Seventieth Week (Daniel 9:27)-- known also as the Tribulation Week-- is the present focus of prophetic interest, because it still remains to be fulfilled. However, The Ancient of Days (7:9) has wisely outlined a much broader program of Seventy Weeks-- from 445 BC to 2005 AD-- that includes Christ's Atonement on Calvary, the Church's evangelization of the world, the judgment of the world, and the establishment of the Millennial Kingdom of the LORD Jesus Christ on Earth. The following is an exposition of Daniel 9:24, and is intended to emphasize some foundational aspects of "things to come" (John 16:13). All discussion and appreciation of the "things which must shortly come to pass" (Revelation 1:1) must first grapple with this revelation by the Angel Gabriel to the prophet Daniel, the "greatly beloved" (Daniel 9:23). When the Redeemed of the LORD arrive at their Heavenly destination, much of their rejoicing will be centered upon how wise God was in planning the events of Daniel's Seventy Weeks.

The Wisdom of More Than One Rapture ---New Window 3-31-2001
Tom Stewart

"And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him" (Genesis 5:24).
"The Professed Church's uncertainty of Rapture or no Rapture-- and, if Rapture, then when-- is interesting, considering the fact that there have already been at least two Saints that have been Raptured, i.e., Enoch and Elijah-- and that, before the New Covenant! 'But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the Mediator of a Better Covenant, which was established upon Better Promises' (Hebrews 8:6)... The possibility of More Than One Advent for the Messiah has given the Church the Doctrine of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and it has also given the Body of Christ the legitimate expectation that More Than One Rapture will yet provide for the Son a worthy inheritance... The examples of Enoch and Elijah only reinforce the concept that the LORD God has wisely seen fit to accomplish More Than One Rapture already, setting the precedent for the future. 'Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come' (1Corinthians 10:11). Man's tradition is most often an impediment to the understanding of More Than One Rapture."

Lest We Forget

A WStS Prologue of J.A. Wylie's "The History of Protestantism"

"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men"
(1 Corinthians 7:23).

by Tom and Katie Stewart

Martyrs have added their testimony to the foundation laid by our LORD. "If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward" (1Corinthians 3:14). They have given us an heritage unto the LORD, a lineage of faith. They have given us their testimonies of a Love that the flames could not burn out. For example, "These homilies [religious writings-- testimonies] were golden cups, filled with living waters, and when the people of England pressed them to their parched lips, it well became them to remember whose were the hands that had replenished these vessels from the Divine fountains. The authors of the homilies—Cranmer, Ridley, Latimer—though dead, were yet speaking. They had perished at the stake, but now they were preaching by a thousand tongues to the people of England. Tyrants had done to them as they listed; but, risen from the dead, these martyrs were marching before the nation in its glorious exit from its house of bondage" (excerpted from "The History of Protestantism", ---New Window Volume 3, Book 23, Chapter 15).

The word "protestant" is a reactionary word. It objects to the errors of the Church of Rome.
"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" (2Corinthians 6:14). In 1755, Samuel Johnson's dictionary defined a Protestant as "one of those who adhere to them, who, at the beginning of the reformation, protested against the errours of the church of Rome." Error-- in the name of Christ-- is to be separated from and reproved. "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" (Ephesians 5:11). To passively abide in the darkness of Roman Catholicism is to take sides against the LORD Jesus Christ... "It is that ignorance which paralyses the arm of the Church of Christ, and makes the glorious word "Protestant" senseless, almost a dead and ridiculous word. For who does really protest against Rome today? where are those who sound the trumpet of alarm?" (excerpted from "Fifty Years in the Church of Rome" ---New Window by Charles Chiniquy).

"THE HISTORY OF PROTESTANTISM"

by J. A. Wylie
(1808-1890)

COMPLETE LIBRARY

As a prominent spokesman for Protestantism, this is Dr. Wylie's best known writing. "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the Common Salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the Faith which was once delivered unto the Saints" (Jude 3). His travels took him to many of the far-flung places, where the events of Protestant history transpired. It is a solemn and sad reflection on the spiritual intelligence of our times that J. A. Wylie's classic, "The History of Protestantism" went out of publication in the 1920's. There are 3 volumes of 24 books, which comprise Dr. Wylie's monumental work.

"The men who handed in this protest did not wish to create a mere void. If they disowned the creed and threw off the yoke of Rome, it was that they might plant a purer faith and restore the government of a higher Law.
They replaced the authority of the Infallibility with the authority of the Word of God. The long and dismal obscuration of centuries they dispelled, that the twin stars of liberty and knowledge might shine forth, and that, conscience being unbound, the intellect might awake from its deep somnolency, and human society, renewing its youth, might, after its halt of a thousand years, resume its march towards its high goal."
-from "The History of Protestantism"

Since "The History of Protestantism" is out of print, it is now-- to our knowledge-- available only in digital format. We have converted it to HTML. Each of the 24 books are available separately, which makes them easy to browse online, with footnotes completely accessible.
A composite Table of Contents is also provided to give you an overview of the subjects covered in the 24 books; thus, enabling you to access individual chapters.

"THE COMING PRINCE"

by Sir Robert Anderson
(1841-1918)

"The false church and the true are typified under kindred emblems. Jerusalem, the Bride, has its counterpart in Babylon, the Harlot. In the same sense in which the New Jerusalem is the Jewish church, so likewise Babylon is the apostasy of Rome. The heavenly city is mother of the redeemed for ages past (Galatians 4:26) the earthly city is mother of the harlots and abominations of the earth. (Revelation 17:5) The victims who have perished in the persecutions of Antichristian Papal Rome are estimated at fifty millions of human beings; but even this appalling record will not be the measure of her doom. The blood of 'holy apostles and prophets,' — the martyred dead of ages before the Papacy arose, and even of pre-Messianic times, will be required of her when the day of vengeance comes."

"What is true of all Scripture is specially true of prophecy. It is ours to assign to it a meaning; but he who really believes it to be Divine, will hesitate to limit its meaning to the measure of his own apprehension of it.

The prophecies of Antichrist afford a signal and most apt illustration of this. Were it not for the prejudice created by extreme statements, prophetic students would probably agree that the great apostasy of Christendom displays in outline many of the main lineaments of the Man of Sin. There is, indeed, in our day a spurious liberality that would teach us to forego the indictment which history affords against the Church of Rome... the real question at issue relates to the character, not of individuals, but of a system.

It is the part, therefore, not of intolerant bigotry, but of true wisdom, to search the records of the past — terrible records, truly — for the means of judging of that system. The inquiry which concerns us is not whether good men are found within the pale of Rome — as though all the moral excellence of earth could avail to cover the annals of her hideous guilt! Our true inquiry is whether she has suffered any real change in these enlightened days. Is the Church of Rome reformed?... And if not, let but dark days come again, and some of the foulest scenes and blackest crimes in the history of Christendom may be re-enacted... They do good service, therefore, who keep before the public mind the real character of Rome as the present day development of the apostasy.

But when these writers go on to assert that the predictions of the Antichrist have their full and final realization in the Papacy, their position becomes a positive danger to the truth. It is maintained at the cost of rejecting some of the most definite of the prophecies, and of putting a lax or fanciful interpretation upon those very Scriptures to which they appeal."

More Concerning Babylon the Great:

To Those Who Refuse To Hearken.

"As for the Word that thou hast spoken unto us in the Name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the Queen of Heaven [Roman Catholicism's Mary], and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil"
(Jeremiah 44:16-17).

What Is Unbelief?
"Faith is the will's reception, and unbelief is the will's rejection, of truth. Faith is the soul's confiding in truth and in the God of truth. Unbelief is the soul's withholding confidence from truth and the God of truth. It is the heart's rejection of evidence, and refusal to be influenced by it. It is the will in the attitude of opposition to truth perceived, or evidence presented. Intellectual scepticism or unbelief, where light is proffered, always implies the unbelief of the will or heart. For if the mind knows, or supposes, that light may be had, on any question of duty, and does not make honest efforts to obtain it, this can be accounted for only by ascribing it to the will's reluctance to know the path of duty. In this case light is rejected. The mind has light so far as to know that more is proffered, but this proffered light is rejected. This is the sin of unbelief."

"Flee out of the midst of Babylon,
and deliver every man his soul:
be not cut off in her iniquity;
for this is the time of the LORD'S vengeance;
He will render unto her a recompense"

(Jeremiah 51:6).

WORDS from the LORD
"
That sin is a moral choice of disobedience to the Almighty, is plain. 'For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry' (1Samuel 15:23). '14 But if ye will not hearken unto Me, and will not do all these Commandments; 15 And if ye shall despise My Statutes, or if your soul abhor My Judgments, so that ye will not do all My Commandments, but that ye break My Covenant: 16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will set My face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. 18 And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins' (Leviticus 26:14-18).

But, sin is also a rejection of love to and a withholding of confidence in the LORD Jesus Christ. 'Herein is Love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the Propitiation for our sins' (1John 4:10). So much is love a factor in our obedience that the Apostle John was inspired to write, 'For this is the Love of God, that we keep His Commandments: and His Commandments are not grievous [burdensome or impossible to keep]' (5:3). Conversely, our disobedience is so reprehensible and hateful to God, that He inspired John to write, 'He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His Commandments, is a liar, and the Truth is not in him' (2:4). A 'faith which worketh by love' (Galatians 5:6) is a confidence in the LORD Jesus Christ that is motivated by a love in us that began 'because He first loved us' (1John 4:19). And, shamefully, our disobedience merely demonstrates that we did not trust God. 'Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that cover with a covering, but not of My Spirit, that they may add sin to sin' (Isaiah 30:1). '24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from Me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten Me, and trusted in falsehood' (Jeremiah 13:24-25). But, 'in the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and His children shall have a place of Refuge'" (Proverbs 14:26).

1. Valiant for Truth
"The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits" .(Daniel 11:32).

The LORD is a man of war, "Jehovah is his name." Those who enlist under His banner shall have a Commander who will train them for the conflict and give them both vigor and valor. The times of which Daniel wrote were of the very worst kind, and then it was promised that the people of God would come out in their best colors: they would be strong and stout to confront the powerful adversary. Oh, that we may know our God: His power, His faithfulness, His immutable love, and so may be ready to risk everything in His behalf. He is One whose character excites our enthusiasm and makes us willing to live and to die for Him. Oh, that we may know our God by familiar fellowship with Him; for then we shall become like Him and shall be prepared to stand up for truth and righteousness. He who comes forth fresh from beholding the face of God will never fear the face of man. If we dwell with Him, we shall catch the heroic spirit, and to us a world of enemies will be but as the drop of a bucket. A countless array of men, or even of devils, will seem as little to us as the nations are to God, and He counts them only as grasshoppers. Oh, to be valiant for truth in this day of falsehood.

2. Let No Evil Remain
"And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of His anger, and show thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as He hath sworn unto thy fathers" (Deuteronomy 13:17).

Israel must conquer idolatrous cities and destroy all the spoil, regarding all that had been polluted by idolatry as an accursed thing to be burned with fire. Now, sin of all sorts must be treated by Christians in the same manner. We must not allow a single evil habit to remain. It is now war to the knife with sins of all sorts and sizes, whether of the body, the mind, or the spirit. We do not look upon this giving up of evil as deserving mercy, but we regard it as a fruit of the grace of God, which we would on no account miss.

When God causes us to have no mercy on our sins, then He has great mercy on us. When we are angry with evil, God is no more angry with us. When we multiply our efforts against iniquity, the LORD multiplies our blessings. The way of peace, of growth, of safety, of joy in Christ Jesus will be found by following out these words: "There shall nought of the cursed thing cleave to thine hand." LORD, purify me this day. Compassion, prosperity, increase, and joy will surely be given to those who put away sin with solemn resolution.
